Zentsuji Temple is temple number 71 in the famous 88 temple circuit here on Shikoku. It's a rather large temple complex. The day we happened to visit was a market day, and many plants were on sale. The complex was huge with many buildings and gates. A large pair of rope sandals, about nine feet tall from heel to toe were hanging in one gateway, and on the other side of the gate two statues of guardian spirits were standing. We saw many pilgrims visiting the temple, praying to the large Buddha statue. Inside were statues of 200 different Buddhist priests, and many candles and incense sticks were on sale along with Buddhist rosary bracelets. They also had a group of twelve stone Buddha statues for each of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac.

Last, but certainly NOT least, there was a five story pagoda. You can see nets hanging off the roof in this picture against the sky. They cover the underside of the roof with nets to keep birds from nesting inside...evidently they do quite a bit of damage to the pagoda, so they cleaned it up and put the nets up for protection. The pagoda is only open once a year, and today was not the day it was open, unfortunately. I would love to visit it and see the inside of the pagoda if I ever get a chance, though.
